8th grade math games
Grow a Sun from moons named 2⁴ and √256, solve 3x − 4 = x + 12 to make your next drop, and find the slope of a rooftop bistro's growing orders. These games practice the eighth grade math that leads straight into Algebra 1.

What kids learn in 8th grade math
Eighth grade is the year before Algebra 1, and in many schools it includes it. Kids learn the rules for exponents, including zero and negative exponents, use square and cube roots, and write very big and very small numbers in scientific notation. They learn that some numbers, like the square root of 2, are irrational, and turn repeating decimals into fractions.
The center of the year is linear equations and functions: solving equations with x on both sides, finding slope as a rate of change, graphing lines and solving systems of two equations. Geometry adds the Pythagorean theorem and transformations like slides, flips and turns.
Which game practices what
- Moon Math: Powers and roots has squares, cubes, square and cube roots and exponent rules like 2³ times 2² = 2⁵. Scientific notation opens after three skill stars and x on both sides after six. Every moon in the jar wears a math name, so a 16 might show up as 2⁴, 4² or √256.
- Fraction Bakery: the Rooftop Bistro chapter is eighth grade: powers of fractions including negative and zero powers, repeating decimals as fractions, slope and rate of change from two points, two-step probability and one percent after another.
- Numeria: set the math level to grades 7 and 8 for integers, equations, exponents and slope, or move up to the high school level for algebra, quadratics and functions.
How the games help
Eighth grade math has a lot of rules that are easy to mix up, like when to add exponents and when to multiply them. Our games ask for typed answers, not multiple choice, and explain each kind of problem after a miss. Moon Math keeps a My math list that shows which kinds of problems are strong, getting there or need practice, and Fraction Bakery shows the rise and run on a graph when a slope answer is off.
Tips for grown-ups
- Count by powers of two. Phone storage comes in 64, 128 and 256. Ask why.
- Find slope in the wild. A phone plan with a monthly fee plus a cost per gigabyte is a line with a slope and a starting point.
- Try huge and tiny numbers. Write the distance to the sun or the size of a cell in scientific notation.
- Explain a rule. Ask why anything to the zero power is 1. There's a neat pattern behind it.
