What kids learn in 3rd grade math

Third grade is the multiplication year. Kids learn what multiplication means (equal groups and arrays), use strategies like turn-around facts and breaking a fact apart, and work toward knowing all the facts to 10 x 10 from memory by the end of the year. Division comes in as sharing and as the reverse of multiplication: if 6 x 7 is 42, then 42 divided by 7 is 6.

The other big one is fractions. Third graders learn that a fraction is a number, place fractions like 3/4 on a number line, find equal fractions such as 1/2 and 2/4, and compare fractions with the same top or bottom number. They also round to the nearest 10 or 100, find area and perimeter, and work out elapsed time, like how long a movie lasts.

Which game practices what

  • Multiply Mountain: Juniper the goat climbs one ledge per fact. New facts start hands-on with arrays to build and berries to share, then move to turn-around facts, the break apart strategy (7 x 8 is 5 x 8 plus 2 x 8), division and missing factors.
  • Sumwhere Isles: Times Table Tundra has times facts from 0 to 10, sharing and dividing and times story problems. Fraction Falls covers naming fractions, fractions on a line, same amount fractions and comparing. Place Value Peaks has rounding, Shape Shore has area and perimeter and Time Tower has how much later.
  • Fraction Pizzeria: customers order pizzas by the fraction, like 3/4 pepperoni, and your child cuts, tops and bakes. Re-slicing a pizza shows why 1/2 and 2/4 are the same amount.
  • Number Line Leap: Crystal Caves puts fractions on a number line from 0 to 1, and Thunder Gorge rounds numbers to 1000.
  • Clock Shop: elapsed time problems, like when a movie that starts at 3:15 and runs 45 minutes will end.
  • Coin Cafe: making change from a dollar by counting up, the way a cashier does.
  • Place Value Pirates: rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 on a number line.

How the games help

Every question is read aloud, with a speaker button to repeat it, so reading never gets in the way of the math. Answers are built, not guessed: arrays with rows and columns, fraction bars to shade, pizzas to slice, clock hands to drag. Mistakes bring a hint with a picture and another try, and facts your child misses come back sooner. Nothing is timed. Multiply Mountain's Grown-up corner shows which skills your child has mastered, what they're working on and their trickiest facts.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Learn facts in families. The 2s, 5s and 10s first, then 3s and 4s, then the rest. Once 6 x 7 is known, 7 x 6 comes along with it.
  • Break hard facts apart. 8 x 7 is 5 x 7 plus 3 x 7. Say it out loud together.
  • Cut real food into fractions. Sandwiches, pizza and chocolate bars make the best fraction lessons.
  • Ask how long until. "Dinner's at 6:00 and it's 5:20. How long do we have?"

Questions

What math do kids learn in 3rd grade?

Multiplication and division facts to 10 x 10, fractions as numbers on a number line, equal and compared fractions, rounding to 10 or 100, area and perimeter, and elapsed time.

What's the best way to learn times tables?

Understand them first with equal groups and arrays, then learn them in families (2s, 5s and 10s first), use strategies like breaking a fact apart, and practice a little every day. Multiply Mountain follows that order.

Is there a fun way to practice fractions?

Fraction Pizzeria turns every fraction into a pizza order. Kids cut the pizza into equal slices, add toppings to the right fraction of it and bake it.

Are these 3rd grade math games safe?

Yes. No ads, no accounts, no chat, no purchases and no tracking. Progress is stored only on your device.

Can my child play these games on a Chromebook?

Yes. They run in any modern browser on Chromebooks, tablets, phones and computers.
