Moon Math

Sleepy moons fall into a glass jar, and two of the same merge into a bigger one, all the way up to a Sun. In Moon Math every moon arrives sealed inside a math problem, and you have to type the right answer before you can drop it.

Quick answers

What age is Moon Math for?

We made Moon Math for ages 11 to 14. It lives in our kids area, which has its own learning games and links only to other kids pages.

Does Moon Math work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. It plays with touch on tablets and phones, and with a mouse on a computer. There is nothing to download.

Do kids need an account to play Moon Math?

No. Our learning games have no accounts at all, so there is nothing to sign up for. Progress and stickers stay on the device they play on.

What your teen practices

  • Exponents and roots. 2⁴, (−4)², 4³, √64 and ∛27, plus exponent rules like 2³ · 2² = 2⁵ and 2⁶ ÷ 2² = 2⁴ (Grades 6 to 8).
  • Solving equations. One-step and two-step equations such as 3x = 24 and 2x + 5 = 21, shown as "find x" (Grades 6 to 8).
  • Integers. Negatives times negatives, |−8|, −(−8) and subtracting a negative (Grades 6 and 7).
  • Percents and fractions of a number. 25% of 32 and ¾ of 16 (Grades 6 and 7).
  • Order of operations and decimals. 2 + 3 · 4, 2(3 + 5) and 0.25 × 32.
  • Powers of two. Every moon is worth a power of two from 2 to 1024, and every merge doubles: 8 + 8 = 16.

How to play

Each new moon shows up as a problem, like 2⁴, √64 or 3x + 4 = 28. Work it out and type the answer on the number pad under the jar (or on your keyboard), then tap Go. There are no choices to pick from, so the only way to open a moon is to solve it. Get it right and the moon is yours to aim and drop.

Get it wrong and we show how that problem works, then give you a brand new problem for the same moon. Each moon gets three tries. Miss three times and that moon floats away with nothing going into the jar, and the next moon comes up. Nothing ever goes into the jar until a problem is solved. Right on the first try, with no hint, earns bonus points, and three in a row earns a star (you can hold three). Spend a star on Pop, which pops any moon in the jar, or Swap, which trades the problem you're on for the next one. Drop a moon straight onto its match for a Perfect drop bonus.

Every 15 drops the jar tips to one side for a few seconds. Merges while it tips score double, and quick merges in a row build a chain. The jar is full when a moon rests above the line at the top for two seconds.

Choose the math

Tap the Math button on the title screen to switch between four sets. The choice is saved on the device.

  • Warm-up: adding, subtracting, times and divide, good for getting the hang of the jar.
  • Powers and roots: squares, cubes, exponents, square and cube roots and exponent rules.
  • Algebra: solve for x, negatives, percents, fractions of a number, order of operations and decimals.
  • Mix it up: a bit of everything, and the default.

Modes and things to unlock

Play is the classic jar, and it saves as you go, so closing the page never loses a game. The Daily Jar gives the same moons to everyone each day, and Zen has no game over: a moon that sits too high just poofs away.

Three daily goals earn stars. Growing bigger moons, making long chains and playing Daily Jars unlock new skies, jars and moon sets on the Shelf, and the Moon book keeps every moon you've grown, including rare dreamy ones. Big moments also earn stickers for the Sticker Book shared by all of our learning games.

Tips

  • Save your stars. A Pop on a big moon stuck under small ones can rescue a nearly full jar.
  • Keep the big moons on one side and the small ones on the other, so a new small moon never gets stuck under a giant.
  • Exponent rules save time: when the bases match, multiplying adds the exponents and dividing subtracts them.
  • For two-step equations, undo the adding or subtracting first, then the multiplying.
  • Save a pair of matching moons near the top before the jar tips. Merges during the tip score double.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Ask your teen to explain why 2³ · 2² is 2⁵ and not 2⁶. Saying it out loud makes it stick.
  • Play the Daily Jar together and compare scores. Everyone gets the same moons that day.
  • Point out powers of two in everyday life: phone storage comes in 64, 128 and 256 GB.

Privacy and safety

Moon Math is part of our learning games area. There are no ads, no accounts, no chat and no tracking, and it loads nothing from outside services. Progress, best scores and stickers stay on the device.

Questions

What grade learns exponents?

Whole-number exponents start in Grade 6, and exponent rules and square and cube roots are Grade 8 topics. Moon Math covers both, and the Warm-up set works for younger players.

Is Moon Math good for pre-algebra?

Yes. The Algebra set has one-step and two-step equations, negative numbers, percents and order of operations, which are the core of pre-algebra.

Is there a timer?

No. Nothing falls until you solve the problem and drop the moon, so there's always time to think.

What happens with a wrong answer?

Nothing goes into the jar. We show how that problem works, then give you a brand new problem for the same moon. Each moon gets three tries; after the third miss it floats away and the next moon comes up. The Hint button shows the method without giving away the answer.

Can I pick easier or harder math?

Yes. Tap the Math button on the title screen to choose Warm-up, Powers and roots, Algebra or Mix it up.

Is Moon Math free?

Yes, it's free with no ads and no purchases, on phone, tablet or computer.
