What kids learn in 7th grade math

Seventh grade is about proportional thinking and working fluently with negative numbers. Kids recognize proportional relationships in tables and graphs, solve percent problems like tax, tips, markups and discounts, and find percent increase and decrease.

They add, subtract, multiply and divide positive and negative numbers, including fractions and decimals. They solve two-step equations and inequalities, work with scale drawings, circles and angles, and meet probability, from simple chances to compound events.

Which game practices what

  • Moon Math: the Negatives topic covers integers, opposites, absolute value and multiplying and dividing negatives, and the Equations topic has two-step equations like 2x + 5 = 21 and order of operations. Fractions and percents are a topic of their own.
  • Fraction Bakery: the Harbor Market chapter is seventh grade: proportions, percent increase and decrease, a markdown on a cookbook, adding and subtracting negative fractions on a number line, multiplying and dividing signed numbers, probability as a fraction and rates with fractions, like 1/2 mile in 1/4 hour.
  • Numeria: set the math level to grades 7 and 8 for integers, equations, exponents and slope throughout the adventure.

How the games help

Negative numbers and percents trip up a lot of seventh graders, usually because the rules were learned without a picture. Our games show a number line road for negatives, a percent bar for discounts and a spinner for probability. A miss explains the usual mix-up, and missed kinds of problems come back as comebacks a little later, which is where a mistake turns into learning. Answers are typed, not picked from a list, so every right answer is real.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Shop the sale. 30% off and then 10% off isn't 40% off. Work out why together.
  • Leave the tip. Let your teen figure out a 15% or 20% tip at a restaurant.
  • Think in temperatures. From minus 4 to plus 9 is a rise of 13 degrees. Draw it on a line.
  • Check equations by plugging in. Put the answer back in. If both sides match, it's right.

Questions

What math do kids learn in 7th grade?

Proportional relationships, percent problems and percent change, operations with negative numbers, two-step equations and inequalities, scale drawings, circles and angles, and probability.

Is there a game for practicing negative numbers?

Yes. Moon Math has a Negatives topic for integers and absolute value, and Fraction Bakery's Harbor Market puts negative fractions on a number line.

How do you find percent increase or decrease?

Find the change, divide by the original amount and turn it into a percent. Fraction Bakery shows it on a percent bar.

Are these 7th grade math games safe?

Yes. No ads, no accounts, no chat, no purchases and no tracking. Progress is saved only on your device.

Do they work on a Chromebook?
