Blend Bakery

Nutmeg the raccoon runs a bakery where every treat is a word. A customer orders, your child lines up letter cookies to spell it, and then they hear the sounds blend together into the word as it bakes.

What your child learns

Blending is the moment reading clicks: saying /c/ /a/ /t/ and hearing cat. Blend Bakery practices it in both directions. Kids hear a word, break it into its sounds and spell it with cookies (segmenting), then watch and listen as the cookies light up one by one and the sounds slide back together into the word (blending).

The recipe book follows the order most Kindergarten and Grade 1 phonics programs use:

  1. Short a (cat, map, van)
  2. Short i (pig, six, dig)
  3. Short o (dog, box, pot)
  4. Short u (sun, bug, tub)
  5. Short e (bed, hen, web)
  6. Mixed vowels (all five short vowels together)
  7. Sh, ch, th and ck: two letters, one sound (ship, chick, bath, duck)
  8. Blends: two sounds side by side (stop, frog, hand, milk)
  9. Magic e: silent e makes the vowel say its name (cake, kite, bone, cube)

How it works

A little animal customer walks up to the counter with an order card showing a picture. The game says the word. Below the counter is a baking tray with one spot per sound, and a sheet of letter cookies to choose from. Kids drag a cookie onto the tray, or just tap it and it hops into the next empty spot. Each cookie says its sound as it lands.

The cookies are designed to teach. Vowels are pink with a little star. Two-letter sounds like sh and ck sit on one wide purple cookie, because they make one sound. In magic e words the last spot sparkles, and the e cookie goes quiet when it lands.

Tap the speaker on the order card to hear the word again, or the turtle to hear it slowly. Tapping an empty spot on the tray says the sound that belongs there. If read-aloud is off, the word is printed on the order card so the game still works.

Levels and how it adapts

Every chapter has three batches of about 5 words. Trace shows faint letters in each spot. Build gives only the cookies you need. Choose adds extra cookies, always including a different vowel, so your child has to listen to the middle sound and not just guess. Ages 4 to 6 get 2 extras, ages 6 to 8 get 3 and ages 8 to 11 get 4.

Each word is tracked on its own and the tricky ones come back more often. Words your child already knows skip the faint letters, even in a Trace batch. Stars depend on mistakes: no oops earns 3 stars and up to 3 oops earns 2. Finishing the Choose batch opens the next chapter. The age buttons on the title screen let older kids skip ahead.

A wrong cookie wobbles, says its own sound, and the spot says the sound it needs ("That says mmm. This spot needs tuh."). If the sound belongs later in the word, the game says so. After two misses on a spot, the right letter appears faintly and the correct cookie hops up and down. A word that took a couple of tries brings a similar word back at the end of the batch. There's no timer.

Rewards

Every new batch puts a new treat in the shop window, 27 in all, from Sugar Cookie to Chocolate Cake. Stars also upgrade the shop itself: flower boxes at 3 stars, then string lights, a shop cat, a door bell and more, up to a star on the roof at 65. Stickers for the shared Sticker Book come for the first batch, a perfect batch and each finished chapter.

Today's orders is a daily set of 6 words, the same for everyone, picked to suit your child's age. It keeps a day streak going.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Stretch words like a rubber band, "sssuuunnn," then snap them short: sun.
  • Write cat on paper and change one letter at a time: cat, cot, cut, hut. How many real words can you make?
  • Point out sh, ch and th on signs and cereal boxes. Two letters, one sound.

Privacy and safety

No ads, no accounts, no chat and no tracking. Your child never types a name. Stars, treats and stickers are saved only in the browser on your device, and the only links go to our other learning games and the Sticker Book.

Questions

Is Blend Bakery free?

Yes. It plays free in the browser with no ads, no download and no sign-up.

What is a CVC word?

A three letter word with a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, like cat, pig or sun. They're the first words most kids learn to sound out.

What age is Blend Bakery for?

Ages 5 to 7, usually Kindergarten through Grade 1. Kids who know most letter sounds are ready for the first chapter.

What is magic e?

A silent e at the end of a word that changes the vowel from its short sound to its long one, so cap becomes cape. The last chapter practices it.

Can my child play with a mouse?

Yes. Drag cookies with the mouse or click them. On a keyboard, typing a letter places that cookie in the next spot.
