Column 21
Column 21 takes the old idea of making 21 and turns it into a 60 second rush. Cards come one at a time, you drop each into one of four columns, and any column that hits exactly 21 clears for points and extra time.
What is Column 21?
Column 21 is a quick solo card game built around one number. You've got four empty columns and a stream of cards. Your job is to place each card so the columns add up to exactly 21, without ever going over. It borrows the card values from the classic game of 21 but plays more like a puzzle against the clock.
A round is short, which makes it a good one to play while the kettle boils. It's free, runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, and there's no download.
How to play
The card you're holding sits at the bottom of the screen, with the next card shown beside it. Tap a column (or drag the card onto it) to drop the card there. Then the next card slides in.
Card values
| Card | Counts as |
|---|---|
| 2 to 10 | Their number |
| Jack, Queen, King | 10 |
| Ace | 1 or 11, whichever helps |
| Wild (star) | Makes the column exactly 21 |
Ways to clear a column
- Exactly 21. Any mix of cards that adds to 21 clears the column.
- Natural 21. Two cards making 21 (an Ace and a 10-value card) clears for extra points.
- Five cards. Get five cards into a column without going over and it clears, whatever the total.
- Wild card. The star card clears any column it lands on, empty or not.
Busting, hearts and the clock
If a column goes over 21 it busts: the cards are thrown out, your combo resets and you lose a heart. You start with 3 hearts and 60 seconds. The game ends when the timer hits zero or you run out of hearts, whichever comes first.
Trash
Got a card that fits nowhere? Tap the trash to throw it away. You start with 2 trashes, and every 5 clears earns one more (you can hold up to 3). Trashing doesn't break your combo.
Scoring
| Clear | Base points |
|---|---|
| 21 | 100 |
| Wild 21 | 100 |
| Natural 21 (two cards) | 150 |
| Five cards | 175 |
| Clean Sweep (all four columns empty) | 250 bonus |
Every clear in a row without a bust builds your combo, and the base points are multiplied by it, up to x8. So your third clear in a row is worth three times as much as the first. The Clean Sweep bonus gets the combo multiplier too.
Clears also add time to the clock: 2 seconds for the first clear in a combo, rising by a second with each clear in a row, up to 6 seconds each. A long combo can keep a round going well past a minute.
One small thing to know: the 21 check happens first. If your fifth card lands on exactly 21, it scores as a regular 21, not as a five-card clear.
Controls (phone and computer)
On a phone or tablet, tap a column to drop your card, or drag the card where you want it. Tap the trash on the left to throw a card away. On a computer you can use the mouse the same way, or the keyboard:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 2 3 4 | Drop into column 1 to 4 |
| A S D F | Drop into column 1 to 4 |
| T or Backspace | Trash the card |
| Esc or P | Pause |
Modes and the daily deck
Play is the 60 second rush with a fresh shuffle each time. Daily uses the same card order for everyone that day, so you can compare scores fairly with friends and on the leaderboard. Play the daily each day to keep your streak going.
The cards come from a 52-card deck with two wild cards shuffled in. When that runs out, a new deck (with two more wilds) is shuffled and the stream keeps going.
Stickers and card backs
There are 12 stickers to collect, including Bullseye (your first 21), Natural, High Five (a five-card clear), Wild Ride, On Fire (combo x3), Volcano (combo x5), Clean Sweep, Steady Hand (finish a rush with no bust and at least 3 clears), Rocket (15 clears in one run), and score stickers at 1,000, 2,500 and 5,000 points.
Every second sticker you earn unlocks a new card back. Card backs are shared with every card game on our site, and you can pick yours from the Stickers screen.
Tips and strategy
- Look at the next card. It's shown right beside the one you're holding. If you're holding a 6 and the next card is a 5, a column on 10 is perfect: 6 now, 5 next, 21.
- Keep columns at different totals. If all four columns sit on 15, only a 6 helps. Spread them out (say 11, 14, 17 and an empty one) so almost any card has a home.
- Aim for 11. A column on 11 clears with any 10-value card, and there are 16 of those in every deck. It's the most forgiving total to build toward.
- Respect the combo. A bust resets your multiplier to zero. Late in a big combo, a trash is far cheaper than a risky drop.
- Five-card clears are sneaky good. Small cards are annoying in 21 games, but four or five low cards in one column clear for 175 base. Make one column the dumping ground for 2s, 3s and Aces.
- Save a wild for a messy column. A wild clears whatever it lands on, so drop it on the column that's hardest to finish, like one stuck on 19.
- Chase the Clean Sweep. If three columns are empty and the fourth is about to clear, that's 250 bonus times your combo.
